Sierra Club launches campaign to elect environmental champions in November
Grassroots mobilization efforts accompany over 220 endorsements in local races
The nation’s oldest and largest grassroots environmental group is throwing its weight into election season this year, with a major push to help elect environmental champions. The Sierra Club, a non-partisan organization, has endorsed over 220 candidates for the U.S. House and Senate.
Voters want a clean energy future, and the Sierra Club is promoting candidates who are going to do the right thing to protect communities from pollution and move our country towards green energy,” said Ken Brame, Chair of the Sierra Club Political Committee.
As the nation’s largest grassroots environmental organization, Sierra Club has members within every congressional district in the country. In addition to 220 endorsements of candidates for Senate and Congressional races, initiated locally by Sierra Club members who live in those candidates’ states, the Sierra Club will use direct mail, email, and phone calls to mobilize their membership. The Sierra Club has made financial contributions to over 150 campaigns for U.S. House and Senate and is coordinating staff deployments to 29 sites. In those sites, Sierra Club staff will spend the weeks prior to the election helping to mobilize Sierra Club members in the candidate’s district to phonebank, canvass, and volunteer to help raise awareness about the candidate’s strong environmental track record.
“In many of these races, there is a clear choice between a candidate with a strong environmental record and a candidate who sides with polluters rather than with the public,” added Brame. “Sierra Club’s thousands of volunteers will be pounding the pavement, working the phone lines, and talking with their friends and neighbors to help get environmental champions elected. Our members know that it’s time to protect public health, create green jobs, and achieve twenty-first century energy solutions – and they are willing to put in the time to make sure that their neighbors get to the polls on election day."
