Freeport LNG is a facility in Brazoria County, TX for exporting liquefied natural gas. Freeport LNG is responsible for about one-fifth of all natural gas exported from the U.S.
FERC (Federal Energy Regulation Commission) and PHMSA (Pipelines and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, within the Department of Transportation) have oversight over Freeport LNG.
In summer 2022, there was a major explosion at Freeport LNG. The facility has been closed since then.
Before FERC and PHMSA decide whether to restart Freeport LNG, community members have asked that they be granted transparency about the cause of the explosion and that their demands be addressed. Those demands include:
- Hold a Freeport Public Meeting with FERC and PHMSA staff present
- Update Emergency Response Plans for Freeport LNG
- Develop Gas Export Terminal Regulations
- Finalize policy statements on interstate gas pipelines and consideration of greenhouse gas emissions
The best way to support these local community members and protect people from the dangers of LNG is to write a personal message to decision-makers at FERC and PHMSA.
Together with other concerned advocates, your unique words can push them to address community demands before restarting Freeport LNG. When you fill out this form, the Sierra Club will send your responses to FERC and PHMSA. To learn more about the Freeport explosion and the dangers of LNG, read here.
This form will not add you to any Sierra Club contact lists or database, unless you've already joined them. We will only use your contact details to provide FERC and PHMSA with legally required information. To join Sierra Club's contact list, go to sierraclub.org.
