CALIFORNIA HAS AN OIL PROBLEM.

Despite California’s reputation as a global leader in climate action, what many people do not know is that the state is actually one of the largest oil producers in the nation. There are over 105,000 oil and gas wells in the state and over 5,000 wells in Los Angeles County.

Nearly 2 million Californians live within 3200 feet of a well — the scientifically determined safe distance — are are exposed to toxic emissions. Studies link proximity to oil and gas drilling to increased risk of asthma and other respiratory illnesses, pre-term births & high-risk pregnancies, and cancer. Low income and communities are color are disproportionately impacted. Studies have found that oil drilling has health impacts as far as 2.5 miles away. These emissions are also a major contribution to greenhouse gas pollution and the global climate crisis. Most of these toxic neighborhood oil and gas wells are in low-income communities, where people of color are disproportionately harmed.

But oil production is on the decline in California — whether or not we take action. Thanks to our volunteers and coalition partners, LA City and LA County both voted to phase out oil drilling and ban new oil drilling.

The end of oil drilling is on the horizon, and it is up to us to make sure that decision-makers hold the industry accountable to protect communities, workers, and our planet.
