Tell Consumers Energy that its time to retire the J.H. Campbell Coal Plant!

Consumers Energy has promised to close Campbell Units 1 and 2 by 2031 and Unit 3 by 2040, when all of these plants are over 60 years old. The J.H. Campbell plant is the largest source of greenhouse gases and toxic pollution in West Michigan. Pollution has not only an environmental cost, but a human one as well. The risks to our environment and health have grown too large to wait another generation for relief.

We need an earlier retirement. Tell Consumers Energy CEO Patti Poppe to speed up the retirement of the J.H. Campbell Coal Plant in West Olive and act in the best interests of Michigan families. 2040 is too long to wait for clean air and clean water.

Consumers Energy CEO Patti Poppe: I am calling on you to retire the J.H. Campbell Coal Plant in West Olive and act in the best interests of Michigan families, our air, our water, and our climate. We cannot wait until 2040 to end the pollution to the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the climate we live in. Top reasons Campbell Units 1 and 2 should be closed by 2023 and Campbell Unit 3 by 2030: - Ottawa County, where the plant is located, was given an “F” grade for air pollution by the American Lung Association’s State of the Air report in 2018. - Campbell is the No. 1 polluter in West Michigan contributing to unhealthy air and climate change. - In 2017, the Campbell plant discharged over 12,000 pounds of toxic metals into our waterways. - The Clean Air Task Force estimates the Campbell plant is responsible for 79 deaths, 504 asthma attacks, and 3,763 work loss days per year. - Campbell Units 1 and 2 are more than 50 years old and no longer cost effective. Expert testimony has shown that customers would likely save money if Consumers Energy closed Campbell Units 1 and 2 in 2023 and replaced them with wind and solar. - A strong majority (72%) of Michigan voters support a goal of 100% renewable energy by 2030, according to a 2018 Sierra Club poll. You must accelerate your move toward sustainable, clean energy to stop the harm to Michigan’s water, air, and climate.
